The requirement from IAMAI and their sponsors such as Meta and Google was to create a web report and glossary to standardise artefacts related to Notice & Consent for introduction of PDPA laws in India in Indic languages for designers and policy makers with the Next Billion Users as the MVP.
Who is IAMAI?
Established in 2004, the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) is a not-for-profit industry body and represents the digital services industry with over 400 Indian and multinational corporations as its members, which include established companies in diverse sectors of the digital ecosystem as well as start-ups.
My Role
Initially worked on the scope for the project then referencing and working on a segregated board of good/bad practices followed in the industry. Based on this created a set of proposed artefacts for plug and play in the industry.
Simplified the language and aided understanding of technical terms, while creating a system of analysis for the language. Worked on user testing with 20 + 40 participants from tier 2 & 3 regions.

The Problems
Literacy Rates and Internet Usage
Certain users could not read English and in paying attention to reading text heavy documents. There was also a lack of understanding technical terms and the general working of the Internet, which lead to low internet literacy rates.
They also created strong relationships between what they knew around them and what they understood from certain terms. For example, they understood an application as a bank loan application form.
Use of punctuation which is not native to the language also builds confusion. Some words in English are pronounced similarly in Hindi but mean something else. eg. Punch (to hit in English) and Panch (5 in Hindi)

Benchmarking
At this stage the client had provided us with certain websites and applications in a more direct benchmarking, I worked on finding more platforms that we could refer to and the following were finalised for both UI and UX :
Analysis on Existing Artefacts
During the initial benchmarking, I found websites using jargon and technical terms that lacked explanation through examples, this did not aid a user's understanding of them.
Other problems in existing artefacts
Design Problems with Languages
- Noticed inconsistencies in sentence lengths and letter counts during change in language which led to changes in layout.
- Change in font height and kerning when translated from English to Hindi which leads to discontinuity during reading.

- Inconsistency while typing "matras" (vowel signs) or संयुक्त अक्षर (composite letters) across different fonts.

The Solutions
Analysing Qualitative & Quantitative Data
- Studied research methodologies and worked closely with the senior researcher to understand methods of data analysis.
- Created a system of marks for the quantitative data for 20 (preliminary) and 40 (final) user tests.
- Created a method of quick note taking during interviews for qualitative data and merged it with quantitative.
- Reimagined data visualisations for the analysed data. Reworking on the website to find ways to beat banner blindness.

Solving Design Problems in Languages
- Created a table for the suggested type specifics to help transition smoothly from English to Hindi.
- Standardising spellings in the artefacts along with icons and illustrations.
- Avoiding the use of vowel signs and composite letters which could cause problems between font styles.
Results and Takeaways
Suggesting best design practises and visual aid while explaining why they are so for artefacts relating to notice and consent to standardise them industry wide.
Working with an Indic language to create a glossary for technical terms relating to the internet and aiding understanding.
What I Have Learned
- Worked with policy makers and journalists to understand possible flaws and solutions in existing implementations.
- Worked with design teams from MNC's such as Meta and Google for feedback on working processes and implementation.
